Ok so we’re back with another Retro-(Re)-Spect to fill the musical gaps between the last issue and the next. Today’s feature song is one that I’ve loved ever since I first heard it and has never gone stale. It’s quite possibly my favourite tune ever to emerge from the eighties and that’s a massive call as anyone who knows me knows that I’m a big fan of everything eighties. It’s just hard to go past David Byrne’s musical genius, style and charisma during this live performance and the complexity of the song that comes together from the collaboration of such simple repetition by individual musical elements. It was also the title and feature song in a recent flick starring Sean Penn that came out a couple of months back, and it’s funny that one of the rants in the movie is Sean getting frustrated that everyone thinks the song is an original by the band “Arcade Fire”. I am equally as frustrated by this as Arcade Fire’s version is not even nearly as good as this live performance. So here it is, a bit of respect for the retro, given in retrospect. Taken from the DVD “Stop Making Sense”.
