Death Cab For Cutie – No Room In Frame

Just over a decade after the release of their critically acclaimed album TransatlanticismDeath Cab For Cutie are set to release their latest effort entitled Kintsugi and one of the lead singles “No Room In Frame” takes me back. In what is perhaps the closest track to anything from that 2003 album, the band show maturity, the same hot talent they’ve always had and a fierce understanding of pop hooks and the genre.

The wispy tones and down-tempo beat keep the focus on the lyrics, building it up for a chunky chorus that is best listened to in the dark. There’s a sly tinge of Jimmy Eat World in there too, perhaps in the bridge it’s most evident. Nevertheless, it’s the most classic soundtrack-to-my-teens track I’ve heard in just about a decade and you should all check it out.

Kintsugi is set to be released smack bang on the end of the month, March 31st. “No Room In Frame” is available now on iTunes and Spotify.

Asta – Dynamite (feat. Allday)

Triple J icon and winner of Unearthed High in 2012, Asta has released a new single just last week, the eclectic “Dynamite” featuring Adelaide rapper Allday. The track is scorchingly impressive, showcasing the soaring vocal range of the artist herself, and a great funky arrangement to suit the rhymes of her counterpart.

Asta will be touring the new single nationwide during March. You can grab tickets now for any of the below dates.

Twin Shadow – I’m Ready

Brooklyn native Twin Shadow has always been quite a unique entity. His upcoming album Eclipse is one of the most anticipated releases announced this year, and the singles he’s released leading up to it have justified the excitement. Last week he released another of those singles, in the anthemic “I’m Ready”, a track whose complexity is masked with pop intentions.

The song, unlike the other releases so far, at least has a bit of structure to it. In the same vein of something like Bleachers, it sprays with a sort of eighties high school movie vibe mixed with inner city dreams. It’s a tragic love song and you can really, truly feel it when you listen. As someone who enjoys Twin Shadow, but is not exactly a crazy fan, I’d say “I’m Ready” is his best work yet. I’ll be listening for some time.

Miami Horror – Love Like Mine (feat. Cleopold)

Back in the days that Melbournites Miami Horror first launched, I wasn’t stupid crazy about them like the rest of the world apparently was. With other acts like Cut Copy and The Presets at the height of their festival fame, Miami Horror seemed to take a backseat, at least when it came to my regular playlist. But late into last year I had the pleasure of interviewing frontman Ben Plant and it got me listening more and more in prep, and I fell absolutely head over heels for their latest efforts.

I don’t think past me was a bad judge of song, or that their old stuff was particularly bad. It’s just that these new efforts are iconic. “Wild Motion (Set It Free)” was liken to something from Talking Heads with catchy hooks streaking through its system, definitely one to be remember for some time to come. The latest release, “Love Like Mine”, came out late this week and it’s another ode to the eighties with a modern day twist, spruiking itself with confidence and a free love vibe. I could try and describe the actual music and what’s involved, but I feel like the best way to sum up the track would to say that if it were a stereotype of a person, it would be a California girl in a neon yellow one-piece swimsuit rollerskating down Venice Beach with a boombox cassette player blasting over her shoulder. Penguin Prison – Never Gets Old

Penguin Prison is back with another piece of pop gold in the lead up to his next album due out later this year with the track “Never Gets Old”. We’re all very excited for it. The man has obviously been getting a lot of inspiration from RAC (or the other way around, we’re not sure), and he’s putting that to good use.

The song is a pretty standard formulaic one, with the vocals not trying too hard and a verse, chorus, rinse, repeat sort of vibe. But Penguin Prison knows how to do this with style and maybe it’s true. Maybe it will never get old. I guess we’ll have to wait for announcement for dates on the album. In the meantime, check out the new track below.

Eves The Behavior – TV

Now is definitely the time to strike for young solo female artists, with a slew of unreal tracks being released over the last year from some of the bigger names, and a crazy amount of underdogs like Kate Boy, Say Lou Lou and Chloe Howl to name a few. On Aussie soil it’s no different, as Brisbane native Eves The Behaviour has recently turned out a pretty sweet tune in her latest “TV”, bringing to life a beautifully dark and inherently Australian number that rivals the best of the global phenoms.

“TV” is a ‘deep bottle green’ according to Hannah Karydas’, the mysterious young lyricist and vocalist behind the Eves The Behavior moniker, who has quietly been crafting intriguingly disillusioned-pop since her independently released debut single “Zen” emerged on airwaves last year. The track was crafted with the help of New York born, Sydney based producer Eric J (Flight Facilities, Flume and Chet Faker).

Eves The Behavior’s “TV” will be available next Monday The 19th of January via iTunes and she’ll be playing at Laneway Festival 2015. The track below will unlock on Monday but for the meantime, check out her other stuff here.

ALBUM REVIEW: Pepa Knight – Hypnotized Vol. 1

Side-tracking from the successful ethnic-pop collaboration that is Jinja Safari, Central Coast native Pepa Knight released his debut EP Hypnotized Vol. 1 last Friday and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Alongside an exciting start to his solo act, just over a month ago the man welcomed a baby boy into the world, which would be sure to inspire any regular man let alone a musical maestro. Perhaps a lot of that life affirming, dawn-of-a-new-day type of thinking shines through in the new work. Perhaps it’s just a really great listen. The way this EP reaches out and grabs at your heart and mind, I think you’d be a fool to listen to it and believe it’s anything but the first option.

The record introduces itself with the opening track “Hypnotized”, beginning the journey that is getting to know Pepa Knight, because that’s what a lot of this collection actually feels like. A journey and an experience. Sounds wanky, I know. But seriously, listen to it and tell me I’m wrong. It’s probably why his live performances are well complimented by 3D glasses and are commonly held in teepees. It’s something you need to actually feel to believe. The title track is littered with world music inspired strings and percussion, brought together in a likeable collaboration in large part thanks to Pepa’s pop infused vocals, which add that much needed element of familiarity. Near the end we hear the words, “Do you feel alive?”, offering an eager clue at the tangibility of what’s to come.

The most obvious choice for highlight of Hypnotized Vol. 1 would be the debut single “Rahh!”. Feeling like an incoherent and passionate scream at the world, there’s something very Gotye-esque about it, with much catchier undertones and use of the signature sitar and thumping drums. It’s an uplifting, life-affirming collage of travel, freedom, love and loss. A cacophony of every feeling you’ve ever felt meshed into one. With this number, I suggest you just put your ear-buds in, close your eyes and listen. You’ll fast find that you love wherever you are, whatever you’re doing.

“The Desert Guide” and “Fortress” continue on with the ethereal, wispy vocal style Pepa seems to have patented throughout the recording process. While the EP doesn’t exactly hit its peak at this point in my opinion, these tracks provide good fodder for a respectable first offering. It’s here where the experimental nature of the whole project shines through, and will earn big points with fans of his previous stuff.

The latest single release, “Coyote Choir”, is a happy little tune, giving a courageous nod to harder times. It’s a very solid number, perhaps the easiest to digest on the collection if you’re into simpler pop tunes. That’s not to say it’s actually “simple” in any recognisable way. It’s just very heightening. Again, intensely busy percussion sections mix with an uncommon mix of string elements to create something truly unique. Not just because of the fact that this is a style of music not often heard on the Australian circuit, but because Pepa somehow manages to mix his pop prowess with the unknown in such a masterful way. Honestly, in songs like “Coyote Choir”, the most unique part about it is that when it comes to pure likability and respect for musicianship, you don’t have to sacrifice one for the other.

I know this is supposed to be an album review. But it feels like an injustice for someone like me to talk about Pepa Knight’s Hyptonized Vol. 1 in terms of the music. The man is a fucking talented virtuoso, way outside of my ability to describe. It’s much easier to listen to the album and just get happy about life.

Parade Of Lights – The Island

I know this is late. I mean Parade Of Lights released this EP about 7 months ago. But while the rest of the world rejoiced, Australia only received availability of the rest of the work yesterday! Previously, I’d posted about Golden and We’re The Kids, but after hearing the rest of the effort it’s clear that the standout track from the EP is this one, The Island.

Basically, it kills. Synth pulses throughout the traffic of the track, flowing brilliantly against the lead vocalists emotionally charged melodies. It’s a historically effective pop track with a cheeky nod to the indie side in us all.

Tim & Jean – Like What

So this is weird. I started listening to Tim & Jean this morning as per a spotify recommendation and immediately thought, why the hell haven’t I heard of these guys before?

Looks like this album, Like What, sprouted almost a year after the success of Passion Pit’s Manners, and you can easily pick out similarities between the two. Like, REALLY pick up the similarities. A lot of music blogs would heavily criticize the “unoriginal” nature of such an album, but I on the other hand, love stuff like this. In the times when an album like Manners really starts to wear on you for the fact that you love the style and the songs but hitting the repeat button so many times starts to make you ache for a similar vibe, just different songs. A new album is too far away and I need my fix now. Here enters, Tim & Jean, with their smooth electro-styled dance-rock loveliness.
